Who may apply?
PhD students and postdoctoral scientists with a background in biology, environmental sciences, medicine, veterinary medicine, chemistry, geography and bioinformatics.
Level of English
The course language is English and participants are expected to give a detailed talk about their work and are expected to actively take part in the discussions.
ECTS Credits
Participants having successfully completed the Summer School will receive a certificate of attendance and can obtain 2 ECTS points. 2 ECTS correspond to 50 – 60 hours of work, consisting of preparatory work for keynote lectures and the participant presentation and full participation in the course. Acknowledgement of the ECTS points in the study programmes at home institutions other than the University of Bern is the responsibility of the participants.
Technical requirements
To participate, you will need access to a computer with reliable high speed broadband access to ensure that you can actively engage in the daily video live sessions.
Once enrolled, further information will be sent to participants about joining the sessions etc. It is expected that that Zoom and Microsoft Teams will be used. Please note that we cannot provide technical support during the virtual sessions.

If you are offered a place on the course, you will then be sent details of how to pay. Your registration is completed and your place on the virtual school is guaranteed only once payment has been received.
Course fee waiver or reduction
Course fee reduction can be granted for students experiencing financial hardship.
For students experiencing financial hardship, for example:
- those from a low-income family
- a mature student with existing financial commitments
- those with a disability
- a student with a child or children, especially single parents
